It was after 6 pm on a Tuesday and although we were promised a dry and fresh afternoon, it hadn't given up on pouring! James and I were sitting there going over the tennis results, at the ready for the seventh job to come in. Finally we received a phone call from a lady on a business trip who had arrived at the Esso filling station in Farley and filled the wrong fuel in her diesel metallic yellow Vauxhall Corsa rental car by mistake. The unfortunate thing was rather troubled it seemed, telling me "I still can't believe that I've wrecked the vehicle! I'm so accustomed to filling up my petrol car I completely forgot I was operating a diesel!" We instructed her to settle back and not to worry, and also that these things unfortunately often happen. She had managed to move the vehicle into a safe space and, seeing as it was no more than a few miles away from the office, we were able to find the lady fairly quickly. The bad fuel was cleaned up and removed so she was able to return to the hotel she was lodging at. Despite the fact that we got really drenched, it was all worth it seeing her drive off satisfied and a lot less stressed. Yet another fuel drain in Staffordshire well done in my mind!

The 3 things you NEED to know about Wrong Fuel!

AdBlue Contamination

All around Staffordshire we have encountered increasingly more instances of AdBlue contamination when someone has put AdBlue right into their diesel tank. This is to a certain extent thanks to people not understanding the way to use it (please note: it is not a fuel additive), and partially because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are normally directly close to each other on the vehicle.

So, what exactly is the trouble with putting AdBlue in the diesel tank?

As the product is predominantly ionised water, it is as bad as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend whatsoever and attempting to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Moreover, the urea is extremely corrosive to fuel system lines and seals and is susceptible to crystalising, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. In the event that you have put AdBlue in your fuel tank remove it asap. And certainly be careful not to turn over the motor - not even to relocate it from the pump. If perhaps you have started the car you will probably need to have the whole fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed.

Contact us if you are a casualty of AdBlue contamination. We can assist. We are Contaminated Fuel Specialists and can take care of all kinds of AdBlue contamination.

I'd been informed she drove away from the petrol station forecourt and was broken down in a backwater road on route to see her godchildren. I plugged her location into the TomTom and was with her within an hour. I reached the location and drained the wrong fuel from the vehicle. While I was doing the work she said to me, "Now I'm getting fairly absent-minded in my old age and did not remember about the car taking diesel because I had just bought it a couple of days back right after my other car, which I had owned for about thirty years, inevitably died". I completed the job and she offered me a toffee and said thank you. What a lovely Staffordshire lady!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
